About Ryan.

Hello, I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family (LMFT #120643) in private practice based in San Francisco, California.

Ever since I was young I’ve had a love for journeys. As a kid, a walk across an Indiana cornfield near my home filled me with as much wonder and adventure as going to a new country does for me today.

I moved West for college, discovered the Sierras, and then kept going, traveling whenever I could.

Over time I developed a keen interest in pilgrimage and spiritual formation and love incorporating this into my therapeutic work.

I’ve taken pilgrimages to Iona, Taizé, Lindisfarne, Assisi and others and walked a number of different segments of the Camino de Santiago.

When I’m not traveling, I love to read, cook, ski, hike and spend time with my wife, my family and friends.

My Approach

Like most therapists, I’m informed by a number of different schools of thought: Psychodynamic. Attachment Theory. Existential. Relational Psychotherapy. Emotionally Focused. Narrative. Internal Family Systems.

I treat a broad variety of issues, including trauma & abuse, family of origin issues, spiritual concerns, and addiction.

Whatever the theory, the beating heart of therapy is always the relationship you and I form. We were hurt in relationships, we heal in relationships.

Together we chart a path thorough unknown territory. No one has ever walked this path before. The one you are walking is absolutely unique. Like any good journey, we cannot know the ending before we set out.

Let’s start walking together.

“In my early professional years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?”

― Carl R. Rogers

The longest journey is the journey inwards.
